Away From Home and Enjoying Outside

Because of my illness, for the last six years I’ve spent most of my time indoors, even during beautiful summer days. Some days, it’s hard to move around to do the most basic tasks, when you’re in pain. ALL. THE. TIME. However, so far this summer, I’ve had the chance to spend time away from home and outside enjoying sunshine and fresh air; and I am beyond grateful for the opportunities to do this.

As I’ve been doing more outdoors I’ve started noticing the things that live outside that want to get inside. Whether it’s mosquitoes so huge that they look genetically modified or fireflies that hop across walls and ceilings flashing the light in their tails, there’s always something trying to get in.

A few days ago, I was mesmerized by this unknown-to-me species of bug as it tried to gain entry to the indoors. As it clung to the fine mesh of the window’s screen, I imagined it yelling at me, “Let me in!” Although, I must admit, it was amazingly patient and thorough. It crawled up, down, across and then back again over the screen on the window trying to find a point of entry.

I stopped watching it after a while and I suppose it gave up trying to get in at some point because when I returned to the window it was gone.

I wonder what task it flew off to give its undivided attention to next…
